When I first listened to Hey Violet (Rena Lovelis, Nia Lovelis, Miranda Miller, Iain Shipp, and Casey Moreta) I had no idea how big of a fan I would become down the road. But after continuing to listen to the music they released, seeing the band play live shows, and having the opportunity to meet them face to face multiple times, I'm glad I discovered them.
Between free meet and greets outside venues to getting to meet the band for free just by being some of the first people to buy a ticket to their show, there's no doubt that Hey Violet loves their fans, and in return, their fans love them back.
Although I love songs like "I Can Feel It", "Guys My Age", and "Fuqboi" because they're super fun to sing along and dance to, a song that stands out when Hey Violet performs live is "O.D.D.". During their New York date this year (2017), the band dedicated the song to a fan. With lyrics like, "I'm a little O.D.D. / Most people really don't get me / I'm the girl in the back of the class / Blank stare, don't care, don't ask," you can feel the emotions behind the words being sung. Hey Violet didn't have to dedicate this song to a fan of theirs, but they did. A simple gesture like that can change a person's life for the better.
There's nothing more that I love than when a band is able to create a song explaining things that mainstream radio just don't want to share. It's topics like feeling left out, bullying, and knowing that people CAN overcome those feelings that need to be put on the radio. People shouldn't have to feel like "it's just them."
Another song that stands out as a personal favorite is "Hoodie." There's something about hearing Rena sing, "I can't keep your love / I can't keep your kiss / Gave you everything and all I got was this," before she starts singing about how the hoodie is all she has left of her former love. It's a simple yet relatable feeling that many people have. At a recent Hey Violet show, I heard a young girl say to her friend how much she can relate to the song, especially when the words, "I'm still rocking your hoodie / And chewing on the strings," were sung. Hey Violet isn't afraid to push the boundaries when it comes to their music and their fans can feel that. So thank you Hey Violet. Never stop doing what you love.
Aside the ones mentioned above, here are some of my favorite lyrics from their album, From the Outside.
"Pictures disappear / And every memory will fade / So cut me, baby, deep enough / So that the scar will stay" - "Break My Heart"
"My sister, bless her heart / She was the only one who had my back when everyone / Else did not / Looking back, it's crazy / I almost turned into the person people told me I / I should be." - "O.D.D."
"You'll find a girl, she'll be just right / I promise babe, you'll be just fine" - "This Is Me Breaking Up With You"
"I haven't seen my ex since we broke up / Probably 'cause he didn't wanna grow up" - "Guys My Age"
"We're all emotional wrecks / But it don't matter cause" - "All We Ever Wanted"
"It makes me think about you / So I wear it when I sleep / I kept the broken zipper / And cigarette burns / Still rocking your hoodie / Baby, even though it hurts." - "Hoodie"
Strife Magazine took the time to speak to some Hey Violet fans from around the world, and this is what they had to say. (Each photo belongs to the person's name below it.)
Lizzy | 16 | Boston - "I love Hey violet because they help me escape whats going on in life and relax. They taught me to be more outgoing and take chances even if I might fail. Without Hey Violet I would probably never have found my best friends and I cant imagine my life without them. I listen to them when I wake up and when I go to sleep. I listen to them at school and at work. I cant imagine my life without Hey Violet in it."
Becca | 15 | London, England - "I love hey violet because they're so unafraid to do what they believe in, they had hard placed rock roots, and they suddenly changed all of that to become electro funk because that's what they believed in and that's what they wanted to do. So many artists nowadays are scared to change their image/sound because they're afraid of 'selling out', but Hey Violet didn't care about that at all, they just went with their gut and made the art they wanted to make. Also, it's amazing seeing a band with three female members, especially a female drummer, as that's so rare and it gives such good role models for little girls who want to be musicians when they're older."
Ava | 14 | California - "I love Hey Violet because they inspire me to be who I am and play musical instruments and strive to accomplish anything. Because of Nia and Rena, I found the ability to play drums and be confident in my self that i can do better and striving to be the best I can be. I love Hey Violet a lot because they made me be the person I am today. Loving music more and more, they are the best musical artists I've seen perform and they put so much effort into making their fans happy and they make me so happy."
Greta | 15 | Michigan, United States - "i first heard of Hey Violet when I saw 5SOS live in 2015, and I thought they were great. I started listening to their music more and more, and saw them open for 5SOS again in 2016. When I began getting depressed, I listened to Hey Violet. When I was extremely suicidal, I listened to Hey Violet, when i hit my 1 month anniversary of being clean, I listened to Hey Violet. They have helped me through so much, and kept a smile on my face when i couldn't keep one by myself."
Lucy | 16 | Malmesbury - "I love hey violet because they have been a huge inspiration to me, they made me feel like I could do anything. Nia was a big inspiration because she was a female drummer and I'd just recently started and I thought it was amazing to have an amazing drummer who was female as a role model and it pushed all the ideas of gender norms away and made me feel more confident in myself. Rena was the reason I started playing bass and I even changed my strings so they'd be neon like hers."
"Overall they were and still are a massive influence and the fact that it has three female musicians in it makes it even cooler and makes me want to be in a band with females. In fact, my friend Alyssa is a huge fan of them and we became friends because of their music and are looking at starting a band. Hey violet produces amazing music that always puts a smile on my face and have made me more confident in myself, as well as made me want to work in the music industry. I only wish I could see them tour this year."
Carly | 14 | Ohio, United States - "I love Hey Violet because like their good friends from 5 Seconds of Summer, they make music that means something. From the Outside is an album that has good quality lyrics and music that's just fun to dance to. At first I wasn't a huge fan of Hey Violet, but once I saw them last year I really got into them and they're one of my favorite bands! O.D.D. is a special song to me because I have cerebral palsy and I'm often treated like an outcast and I feel like I don't belong, but I do belong with the Ultraviolets."
Cara | 16 | Cologne, Germany - "I love Hey Violet because they were one of the first bands who made a difference in my life. They've helped me through so many rough times and their music has always cheered me up and it still does today. They mean the absolute world to me and I honestly have no idea where I'd be without this band!"
Fika | 18 | Indonesia - "I really love Hey Violet so much. I even listened to them since Cherri Bomb. They are so adorable and amazing. I just love how they make music and put the feelings into it like this is so beautiful, but sadly I know that I will never have a chance to meet them. They are so far away and it's kinda impossible for them to have concerts here, but that doesn't make me hate them or anything. I love the way they love their fans, like we are all their friends. They're so sweet to their fans. I love seeing fans get a chance to meet them, it's so cute."
Alyssa | 16 | England - "There are more reasons than I can physically list explaining why I love Hey Violet because they're an absolutely amazing band both musically and personality wise. Since I became a fan of HV I've noticed three things in particular that stand out to me about them, and that's why I love them so much, here they are."
"1. They're always there for fans which I think is so important when you're in a band, they make sure that we know that our support means a lot to them and constantly send us love. It makes me so happy because it shows how genuine they are and that they truly care about us."
"2. Their music, this is an obvious one because as fans we love the music they make, but there's something extra special about HV's songs, everything they do is so unique and I've never heard anything like their material before. They're not afraid to venture out and try new things which is awesome!"
"3. Their live performances are breathtaking, they give each and every performance their all, their shows are always top quality whether they're a support or headliner, plus the live vocals are just as incredible as they are in studio recordings which isn't a reality for a lot of bands!"
Sierra | 13 | Stockbridge, Georgia - "I love Hey Violet because I think their music is very fun and it always gets be in a good mood. They’ve helped me realize it’s okay to be myself and have fun with life, I love them because they all seem like amazingly nice and beautiful people and it’s helped know what I wanna do when I grow up. I feel like anyone can listen to them, like it doesn’t matter how old you are, what skin color you are, it’s just about how much you love the music."
Mattie | 14 | Alabama - " I love hey violet because their music is incredible, relatable, and just flat out some of the best music you will listen too. It can get you so excited but can comfort you when you need it that's why I love it so much. They have a very unique sound and are amazing at what they do, and have helped so many with their music."
Sammy | 18 | New Jersey - "I still remember the day I fell in love with Hey Violet's music the night 5SOS announced HV being signed to their record label. I've been a fan since day one and plan on being here until the last days of the band. Their music is something I've never listened to before and I find myself obsessing over their songs so much to the point where I even end up singing the guitar solos. HV deserves so much more recognition for their music; it's so well produced and put together I'm surprised more people haven't found them yet."
"My friend and I were fortunate enough to meet the band in October 2016 when we won a radio contest. All I can say is Hey Violet are the most down to earth, cutest people you could ever know. Nia especially is someone I look up to; she's the only female drummer I idolize and I aspire to be like her on so many levels. She alone makes me so happy and inspires me endlessly. All I can say is thank you Hey Violet for entering my life and showing me this world of music I didn't know about until now."
Cameron Mater | 17 | Los Angeles - " When I was 13 my parents had to send me away because I struggle with major depression and it caused me to attempt suicide. Two and a half years later, I returned home and started at a new school for junior year. The transition was pretty difficult."
A few months into the school year, I found the music video for "Guys My Age" in my suggestions on YouTube. I've found some great artists by listening to suggested ones, so I clicked on it. I found it pretty catchy and liked the song, and I kept listening to it until I got really into the band and started listening to their other stuff. Having good music eased the difficulty of having to figure out how to adapt back to normal life. Things are still really tough for me mentally, but whenever I'm feeling down I listen to Hey Violet or Cherri Bomb and it always helps me feel better."
"I saw and met them on June 21st, and it was genuinely the best night of my life. Above is a picture of me with Nia. I love it a lot because it's so rare for me to look and feel truly happy, and to be honest I tear up at this a little bit. Hey Violet has made such a big difference in my life, and they really help to keep me moving forward."
Via | 16 | Canada - "I love Hey Violet because their music has brought me up when I was down and has helped me through hard times. "
Marine | 16 | Switzerland - "I love Hey Violet for multiple reasons, but one of the most important to me is because Hey Violet are really close to the fans. They're really active on Twitter, give free M&G, take time to answer their fans and take pics with them. It's really nice and you feel like you're really close to them. They're really sweet person."
"Another reason is the music. I love what they're doing. Everybody put so much passion everytime. You can see Casey dancing with his guitar, Rena singing with all her heart, Nia playing drums like it's all her life, Miranda singing and playing the keyboard with a lot of feelings behind and Iain being really passionate about his bass. They're all putting part of themselves into the music and that's why I'm a big fan of Hey Violet."
Allison Harden | 21 | West Virginia - "Hey Violet are more than just a band I follow to me, they're like friends. And the fandom, Ultraviolets, are like a family to me. Hey Violet have helped me through a tough time of my life with not knowing what I want in life. They were the people who could always cheer me up on those days where I had just broken down. They're so connected with us fans that you never have to feel alone. Hey Violet have made me more outspoken and more positive about myself."
Sophie Little | 15 | Michigan - "I love Hey Violet for so many reasons. First of all, they have amazing music that is relatable to everyone. They make me feel like I can be myself and I am never alone. They help me feel better when I am at my low points. Hey Violet has also helped me find my best friends. I am so thankful for that! I can't wait to see how far Hey Violet goes. I am so proud of them!"
