Melanie Martinez is singer who isn't afraid to be herself or make music that comes out of real situations that people face. Although some of her music is fictional, such as the character Cry Baby, the music is still in some way about her.
On Melanie's official website bio, she shares saying, “I’ve always felt like I was a cry baby. I’m so emotional and I take things very personally, and I’ve been made fun of for that. The name has stuck with me. This album is me figuring out how to embrace being imperfect and accepting the things I can’t change about myself, and being happy and comfortable with who I am. In the beginning, when I started writing, I was insecure. As the album went on I got more comfortable with myself. It’s interesting because what happens to my character also happened to me through the writing process of the album.”
She continued saying, “I got into this zone to write songs where the titles came first. I made a list of all these things that reminded me of my childhood and I would relate each to a current situation I was going through. ‘Carousel’ ended up being about a relationship that felt like we were going around in circles and never able to reach one another. I like the contrast between the theme of childhood and the adultness of the situation.”
“I want it to help anybody who felt like they were a cry baby growing up,” Melanie says. “Writing this album made me more comfortable in my own skin. Through the process I accepted myself and who I am. I hope it can do that for someone else when they listen to it.”
Strife Magazine took the time to speak to some Melanie Martinez fans from around the world, and this is what they had to say. (Each photo belongs with the name of the person in the text above it.)
Diana | 14 | Chicago, Illinois - "I found about Melanie when she first auditioned for The Voice and I've been in love ever since. Melanie has changed my life significantly, both the Dollhouse EP and Crybaby have helped me through a lot. I've been in a deep depression for about 3 1/2 years, and Melanie's music has given me the strength to keep going. A specific song she wrote called "Tag You're it" is by far one of my favorite songs and is one that has helped me through a lot of tough times."
"I'm a rape survivor and this song means so much to me I can't even explain. I couldn't help but cry and yell the lyrics when I saw her live in Chicago in April, which was probably one of the best days of my life. She's taught me that it's okay to be different,to not give a shit of what others have to say about you. I love what she's done for the youth and how far she's come as an artist. I love how she sings about important issues and I love that she cares so much about us.
:I hope I get to personally meet her one day and explain how much not only her music, but Melanie has helped me throughout the years. I really love her and i'm proud to say that i'm a gigantic fangirl of her. I hope she achieves everything she strives for. And to end this huge essay I just want to say thank you. For everything. I'm probably the 1000th person to say this, but I most likely would not be alive if it weren't for her and her music."
Sierra | 13 | Georgia - "I know Melanie isn't just an inspiration for me but also for tons of other people. She is a style icon to me. She doesn't care what anyone has to say about the way she looks. She dresses for her and has inspired me to do the same. The entire Cry Baby album is amazing, but my favorite song on this album is called "Dollhouse." It has helped me get through my struggles I've had with my family and my parents and has made me feel like I'm not alone."
Joséfine | 18 | France - "I think Melanie has been really important in my life because she taught me through "Dollhouse" that every family can have problems. I learned with "Sippy Cup," that I had the right not to be perfect to the eye society as long as I was fine with myself. I remember crying to "Mrs. Potato head," not because I was sad, but because I had realized I was trying to act and look like everyone else, but I had lost myself in the process. She is eccentric but most of all she's herself, and that's great because she does it with so much talent. She's such an inspiring person and I consider her as a role model."
Haley | 15 | Delaware - "Melanie has taught me that I shouldn't be afraid of my past. I should turn my pain into something beautiful and that I might be "crazy" as most people call me because of how or what I think. But as Melanie said "all the best people are crazy". The picture below is of me at my state pride day in my "Pity Party" shirt."
Sydney | 13 | Houston, Texas - "When I listened to Melanie for the first time I thought her music was very different and intriguing. But now, I love her so much. I missed her show in the Spring when she stopped by Houston and I'm disappointed she is not coming back. Nonetheless, her music helped me to find and identify some feelings or experiences I've had. One is too personal to disclose, but her music helped me to gain courage and get over the experience myself. Her music also helped me to become more courageous in social situations and overall. Melanie has done me a service I can never repay, and I hope to see her live."
Eva Love | 15 | Los Angeles, California - "I love Melanie because she's helped me so much through her music. I grew up having a hard time talking to people and making friends, but when I started talking about my favorite music, I found more people with the same interests and it really has helped my transition into high school. That made last year, a whole lot easier. Her music has definitely helped me find people that I can surround myself with that make me happy and share similar interests."
Katy Montague | 16 | Wales, UK - "Melanie Martinez has been a unique inspiration of mine and many other people around the world. Her style and her music have inspired many including me. Her style is very cute/girly and colourful, which has helped me to create new colourful looks with my makeup and etc."
"Also Melanie has brought me closer to a friend as we are going to a concert together in November! We both really enjoy Mel's music and are finally able to go see her. I have also incorporated Melanie into my previous art projects as a I have a passion for art, Overall, Melanie is just a great idol and role model. Her music is different and unique compared to others. Love you Melanie."
Bastian | 16 | Germany - "Melanie's music is a big part of my life. It became something I can really relate to and it ended up saving me. I am truly grateful for her music. I listen to her almost daily. I can't help but sing along every time, and I even got my boyfriend to listen to her. I am truly grateful to have discovered her, and I look forward to seeing her live, again in Hamburg next month."
Emma Sherar | 18 | Hertfordshire, England - "Melanie has had a huge impact on my life not only through her music, but also her style. She's made it not so weird to wear bright eye-shadow and have coloured hair. With her in the limelight, it has given me increased confidence to be myself. Her songs speak to me lyrically and I am able to very much escape my anxiety when listening to her."
Tash | 14 | UK - "I love Melanie so much. Her music, especially "Cry Baby, "s so. unique and has a great message behind it. I love her face and tattoos and piercings. She impacted my life because her lyrics are so meaningful and I somehow relate to what she sings, aside the ones about being kidnapped and stuff. She also kinda made me feel like I'm not alone. That sounds so cheesy but it's true."
Elisa | 14 | Uruguay - "I love Melanie because is my role model. She is my inspiration because their songs have a lot to do with me and make me well."
Aine Caunter | 16 | England - "Melanie completely altered my view on all music as she explored different issues in such creative ways. The way in which she progressed, from her early YouTube videos and unreleased originals to her EP and full album, gives me so much inspiration and admiration as we got to be part of her journey to find her voice and style. And it's not over yet!
"I have so much I could say about her and how she's inspired me to keep trying even when everyone is pulling you down, but there just aren't the words to explain how much Melanie and her music mean to me. Seeing her for the second time in November and being reminded how this angelic masterpiece is just like us at heart will (yet again) be the highlight of my life so far. The photo below is of a top I stitched before seeing her on May 7th which was, as expected, in-cred-ible."
Lucy Maxwell | 17 | Scotland - "I love Melanie because before I listened to her music or watched her videos I was afraid to be myself since I have a very similar style to her. But after becoming a very big fan of her I feel more confident and now I actually dress how I want and with crazy bright make up on. She helped me become more confident in myself."
There's always someone who loves you, and if you need an extra person, we love you. Never let anyone else stop you from being yourself. If Melanie taught us one thing, she taught us that.
